Col. Emmet O. Rushing and Rev. Rayburn Lewis Rushing

on Mon 19 Dec 2016, 9:56 pm
Greg has mentioned Reverend Ray Rushing and his attempt to see Lee Oswald at DPD
And of course there was Colonel Rushing the Texas Civil Air Patrol Wing Commander '50-53

Are they related? Whom are they anyways?

The Rushings who settled in southern illinois, western Kentucky, and Tennessee came from Anson County, North Carolina. [/u]The Rushings in Anson County, North Carolina, seem to be very closely related, but working out the relationships between them is extremely difficult, particularly because there are so many William Rushings. I propose the following hypothesis. The Anson County Rushings seem to be descended from two near contemporary William Rushings. (A contemporary John Rushing lived near Thompson's Creek in the Chesterfield District of South Carolina.) To attempt to clarify the relationships I plotted probable locations of Rushing land grants and deeds. When this is done the Rushings fall into two subgoups. One group lived on Browns Creek near the present community of White Store, near Black Jack Creek. This group is associated with the elder and younger Joseph Whites in land grant and deed records. This group includes two Williams, Richard, Phillip, Soloman, and a John. The other group is found 5-10 miles farther south on Thompson's Creek, on the headwaters of Browns Creek, and on Little Browns Creek. This group includes two or more Williams, two or more Johns, a Mathew, Robert, Noah, and Abraham. They are associated in land grant and deed records with Benjamin Jackson and John Jackson. The breakdown is not exactly this simple, however, and some adjustments have to be made. Except for living near the southern Rushing group, Abraham is most closely tied to Richard, Solomon, and others in the northern group.

Doctor or Colonel?

This call for assistance was universally well received on the part of the attendees and thus was amended eight years later to simply “Friends of Acapulco”.
Dr. Emmet O. (Jack) Rushing was elected first president of the group. Marie Stalon who now resides in Dallas, was married to Doctor Jack for thirty years prior to his death. Marie, Emi Fors, Mary Jane Weldler and myself are, to the best of my knowledge, the only currently surviving founders of the group.

Yes they are. Thanks Greg.
The hard part was connecting all the docs deeds vs the Colonels.
Was a good day when I found they are one and the same.

Cheers mate!

Ed, I looked up that Kentucky Colonel thing. Everyone from Mohammed Ali to Stephen Fry was/is a Kentucky Colonel!

If you had to hazard a guess if the Rushings are related...?

YES THEY ARE!

The Emmett O Rushing clan comes from Anson to Alabama to Texas via Whiddon-Rushing

The Ray Rushing clan comes from the same William in Anson NC to Illinois to Texas via Whiddon- Rushing

It is all in the links I provided.

They would be distant "cousins" ...perhaps third (?)
Don't worry, they are related close enough to know each others grandfathers kin.

They both wind up in Dallas at the same time, doing some of the same work.

I'm sure with time I could make the case they knew each other well enough through CAP activities alone.

I can contact the lady whom is listed as the genealogist to get the exact lineages since she has a note on the site to contact her for updated Illinois Rushings

Cheers!

Yeah, I thought it was all there somewhere, but my brain hurts reading genealogical stuff!

I'd have been amazed if they weren't related, but it's nice to nail it down.

Almost forgot William --- CAP,  military, Intel... I think if he can be shown to be related, it is suggestive of Emmett and Rayburn also having intel connections.

Yet another Colonel named Rushing:

Col. William "Bill" P. Rushing III
Wife - Judy  Ann
He was born in Dec '56,

active in Officers Christian Fellowship

Jim: After Yokota we went to flight training and eventually ended up at Minot AFB two years later. First we were stationed at NAS Pensacola with John and Wanda Roberts and Mark and Julie Ostrye. Then we were stationed at Barksdale AFB with Bill and Judy Rushing. These wonderful couples poured themselves into our lives, showing us what small group leadership looks like. While we were at Barksdale we told our friends Greg and Sheri Pound that if there wasn’t an OCF at Minot we’d start one when we got there.

"Air Base Community gets Bible study The local Officers' Christian Fellowship (www.ocfusa.org) meets at 6 p.m. Sundays at Col. Bill and Judy Rustling's house, 302 Ira Eaker Drive, on Barksdale Air Force Base. Meetings are geared for the military community, but all are welcome. For more information, call 549-1494 or e-mail Rushing at Rushinglnncs.com". Officers' Christian' Fellowship chapter aims at building faith."

There are some mistakes in this story that I will be happy to correct.  My husband was Rev Ray Rushing.  Col. Rushing and Ray were not related and did not know each other.

Hi Wilene,

any corrections would be appreciated.

Relying on genealogical sites can be problematic because contributors are not always accurate in their memories.

I would be especially interested in knowing how you know your husband and Emmett were not related and never knew each other.

Rushing Genealogy

After Dr E O Rushing passed away in 1970, Ray and I spoke to his wife about his family history and she sent a copy of it to us.  I have included it in my family tree.

Thank you for the reply.

If your husband was not related to Dr. EO Rushing, why did you add his family history to your own family tree? Sorry, not trying to be tricky. Just trying to understand.

If you go back in this thread, it was suggested only that they were distantly related (perhaps 3rd cousins). Could that actually be the case?

Going back as far as I can in Ray's family, I can not make a connection.  Ray's father was John Sidney "Joe" Rushing  born 1900 in Okla and died 1958 in Ca.  His father was Henry "Doc" Rushing born 1867 in Alabama and died 1943 in Okla.  His father was Alvin T Rushing born 1828 in Anson County, NC and died in 1902 in Ala.  His father was Burrell Rushing  born 1803 Anson County, NC and died 1876 in Union County, NC.  They lived near White's Store.

Thank you again Wilene. I appreciate you taking the time to respond.

Was there anything else that in your view, needs to be corrected?

Also, did your husband discuss with you, or anyone else, his decision to try and see Oswald? Was he disappointed that he had failed to see him?

Yes, Ray took me and our children to First Baptist Church in Dallas and told us he was going to offer to speak to Oswald at the jail.  He was told they were getting ready to move him and to come back the next day.  On the way home from church, we heard that he had been shot.

Was Ray in the habit of doing this for young prisoners, or did he decide to do it on this occasion because it was such a terrible crime that Oswald had been charged with?

What were Ray's duties in the CAP, if he had any, apart from offering his counsel when needed?

It was not unusual for Ray to pray with jail inmates.  In this case, he didn't think anyone else would.
Ray was active in the Dallas CAP in 1954 and Oklahoma City in 1955.  He did whatever a chaplain was required to do.   Prayer at meetings, I suppose.  He got a private pilot's license a few years later but was not flying then.

It sounds like he a very active and full life.

And a brush with history as well...

Thank you Wilene,
It is wonderful to have first hand accounts and histories.
The information available can be problematic especially when genealogy paths get crossed.

I find it amazing when a family member comes here and gives their memories and shares their history.

Much appreciated!

If I could return to the question of Ray wanting to pray with Oswald...

Det. Jack Revill testified to the Warren Commission that he knew Reverend Rushing because Rayburn had called Revill for help in the past over alleged thefts by a preacher in Ray's employ.

Revill went on to describe Ray as "the type that there is a Communist under each tree or each rock." and that Ray claimed to be "a personal friend of Senator Mundt and the Governor of South Dakota" among other influential people.

I have to admit, I do have some trouble reconciling Revill's information.

If accepted, what we are faced with is a staunch anti-Communist who is associated with an anti-Kennedy church (the First Baptist under Criswell), wanting to pray with a person widely described in the press as a communist (and therefore Godless).

Wilene, your husband must have been a man of insurmountable faith - in this case unfortunately misplaced - when he failed to achieve his goal that day.

I can only imagine Oswald's reaction if your husband had made it to his cell and asked him to kneel in prayer...

Wilene can you check this too?

BURRELL RUSHING (Circa 1798-1867)

Burrell Rushing was born circa 1798 in Anson Co., NC, and died May 5, 1867. He is buried in a fieldstone marked grave in Rushing Grove Cemetery, Decatur Co., TN. Some descendants claim that Burrell Rushing is the son of Revolutionary War veteran Phillip Rushing because a pensioner named Phillip Rushing is listed in Burrell's household in the 1840 census of Perry County. However, Burrell's family probably is in Phillip's household because Burrell had replaced Calvin Lacy as Phillip Rushing's court appointed guardian. Burrell is well outside the 1765-1785 age range for Phillip's children. Burrell probably is son of Richard Rushing, with whom he is tied in land records and the 1820 and 1830 census. Richard may have had eight sons under age 20 in the 1800 census.
Burrell Rushing married Mary Elizabeth Rhodes. She was born circa 1806. She is buried in a fieldstone marked grave at Rushing Grove Cemetery.
Children:

  • Elizabeth Rushing (circa 1825-before 1860). She married Isaac Elias Brasher (January 29, 1826-May 18, 1887), son of Walter Brashears and Elizabeth Roberts, before 1850. He is buried in Morgan Cemetery, Decatur Co., TN.
  • Caswell Rushing (Speculative) (born circa 1828, in TN). He married Eleanor Ann White, May 27, 1851, in Navarro Co., TX.
  • Nancy Ellen Rushing (July 13, 1829-July 27, 1896). She is buried in Rushing Grove Cemetery. She married, first, Henry Harrington (circa 1831-circa 1857), son of Charles Harrington and Lavisa. She married, second, Morris Veal (1806-September 5, 1894), in 1858. Divorce circa 1865. He is buried in Campground Cemetery, Decatur Co., TN.
  • Richard Burrell Rushing (January 27, 1830-January 23, 1900). He served in Company F, 8th Missouri Cavalry, C.S.A. He married, first, Lucinda Rushing, daughter of Iassc Rushing and Rebecca Saint, August 26, 1857, in Natchitoches Parish, LA. She probably is buried near Cape Girardeau, MO. He married, second, Mary J. Smith (August 26, 1842-February 22, 1898), circa 1868. Richard and Mary are buried in Rushing Grove Cemetery.
  • Lavenia Rushing (born December 23, 1830). One source suggests that Lavenia was married first to a Watts. She married, first, Green B. Davis (August 28, 1826-bef. 1860), son of Louis/Lewis Davis and Sarah E. Taylor, circa 1848. She married, second, Unknown McKnight, before 1860. She married, third, John H. Pearcy (May 1, 1809-May 9, 1887), circa 1865. He is buried in Concord Cemetery, Decatur Co., TN.
  • Rebecca Rushing (born circa 1832). She married G. Marshall Harrington (born circa 1828), son of Charles Harrington and Lavisa.
  • Leonidus Rushing (circa 1833-before 1900). He married Darcus J. Powers (born circa 1836), daughter of Henry Powers and Nancy.
  • William Franklin Rushing (October 13, 1836-November 23, 1903). He served in Company F, 55th Infantry (Browns), C.S.A. He married Sarah Ann Powers (August 3, 1838-November 22, 1917), daughter of Stephen Powers, March 10, 1856, in Henderson Co., TN. Both are buried in Rushing Grove Cemetery.
  • Phillip Rushing (circa 1832-1862). Died at Shilo. Served in Company E, 27th Tennessee Infantry, C.S.A.
  • Malvina Rushing (born circa 1838).
  • Andrew Jackson Rushing (January 8, 1843-October 4, 1875). He is buried in Rushing Grove Cemetery. He served in Company I, 50 Tennessee Infantry, C.S.A. He married Elizabeth Powers (October 9, 1842-January 13, 1920), daughter of Stephen Powers. She is buried in Mt. Zion Cemetery, Decatur Co., TN.
  • John Wesley Rushing (December 1850-May 1, 1916). He married Martha Ann Johnson (1856-February 13, 1894). Both are buried Rushing Grove Cemetery.

    ."

    PS
Did you or Reverend Rushing know they had no one to perform the services at Oswald's grave?

The Rev. Louis A. Saunders, who spent half a century as such a quietly dedicated minister, missionary and religious official that he became known chiefly for a single, instinctive act of Christian duty, died on April 5 at his home in suburban Dallas. He was 88 and the man who gave Lee Harvey Oswald a Christian burial.
Mr. Saunders, a native of Richlands, N.C., whose father and two uncles were ministers of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), graduated from Johnson Bible College in Tennessee, studied theology at Duke and received his divinity degree from Vanderbilt University.
He left an Arkansas church after Pearl Harbor to join the Army, completing chaplain's school at Harvard, and participated in the Normandy invasion. He ended up in the Philippines after agreeing to swap assignments so a married colleague could remain close to his children.
After the war, Mr. Saunders stayed in the Philippines as a missionary, building the first high school in a remote Luzon Province and impressed a young Presbyterian missionary by taking her six plants of cascading orchids wrapped in banana leaves.

A few years later, while both were studying theology in New York, they were married. After receiving his master's in a joint Columbia-Union Theological Seminary program, Mr. Saunders served briefly as pastor of a church in Baywater, Tex., before becoming executive director in 1957 of the Fort Worth Council of Churches, an interdenominational group that coordinated social and other programs.

Six years later, when he learned that President John F. Kennedy's presumed assassin, Lee Harvey Oswald, who had been killed by Jack Ruby, was to be buried in Fort Worth, Mr. Saunders knew his duty.
Even as he was leading the arrangements for an interdenominational memorial service for the slain President, Mr. Saunders worked the phones to make sure that a minister would be present when Mr. Oswald was buried at Rose Hill Cemetery on the outskirts of Fort Worth.

Assured that two Lutheran ministers had agreed to conduct the service at the request of Mr. Oswald's mother, Marguerite, a Lutheran and resident of Fort Worth, Mr. Saunders went to the cemetery as an observer.
It was only after he had made his way through the throngs at the cemetery gates that Mr. Saunders learned that the ministers, objecting to an open-air ceremony where they would be exposed to potential snipers, had not appeared.
When Mr. Oswald's mother asked him to fill in, Mr. Saunders obliged. He had left his Bible in his car, but as the small, forlorn Oswald family looked on from a row of folding chairs, he recited the 23d Psalm (''The Lord is my shepherd . . .'') and a passage from John 14 (''In my father's house are many mansions . . .'') from memory, and delivered one of the briefest eulogies ever:
''Mrs. Oswald tells me that her son, Lee Harvey, was a good boy and that she loved him. And today, Lord, we commit his spirit to Your divine care.'

    Thank you, Ed

Yes, I have read the Warren Commission report.  Ray and I met Marguerite Oswald years later and she showed us her copy of the report, pages marked and passages underlined.  Ray told her he tried to see her son the day he was killed.  Her belief was that he had not acted alone.
