Marking Time

From the early '80s when the West Indies (AKA "The Windies") were still a force in world cricket... it is a personal favorite among my scribblings...
MARKING TIME
Tom Waits on the stereo
Jim Beam in my hand
Cricket on the TV
Trouble in the stands
But I got this lady on my mind
Time full ahead
Don't know how to fill the gulf
So I fill my glass instead
Well there's a big fat world out there somewhere
Just spinning in and out of light
And it's the shadows that this makes I'd like to chase
If I weren't too busy marking time
Watch the Windies take another wicket
As Tom serenades his Jersey Girl
And everything comes to life
As these images unfurl
But I got this lady on my mind
Time tickin' in my brain
Don't know what to do
So I fill my glass again
Well there's a big fat world out there somewhere
Just spinning in and out of light
And it's the shadows that this makes I'd like to chase
If I weren't too busy marking time
Now the cricket makes way for an ad
As Tom takes her on all the rides
And somehow it all makes sense
Just like the risin' of the tides
But I got this lady on my mind
Time movin' in a warp
Don't know how to break on through
So I drink another quart
Well there's a big fat world out there somewhere
Just spinning in and out of light
And it's the shadows that this makes I'd like to chase
If I weren't too busy marking time
Well there's a big fat world out there somewhere
Just spinning in and out of light
And it's the shadows that this makes I'd like to chase
If I weren't too busy marking time
