MURDERCADE
Rifle shots ring out in the plaza from the right
Enter Darnell and Weigman in the camera cars
They pan the street with cameras on
Nellie cries out, "My God, they're gonna kill us all!"
Here comes the story of the Murdercade
And the man the authorities came to blame
For somethin' that he never done
Put in a prison cell, then executed without delay, he could-a been
Another fuckin' Hemingway
JFK's body lyin' there does Jackie see
And another man Leon Lee, movin' around mysteriously
Meanwhile Oswald is grabbed,"I didn't do it, " he says, and he throws up his hands
"I was only buyin popcorn, I hope you understand
They let me leave work', " he says, and he stops
"But I guess one of them musta told the cops."
Yes Truly told the cops
As more and more arrived on the scene with their red lights flashin'
In the hot Dallas sunlight
Meanwhile, in another part of town
James Markham and a couple of friends are walkin; around
Number one apprentice in Hamilton's break and enter school
Casin; joints all around town
When a cop pulled up to the side of the road
Followin up on a disturbance call,
Poor dumb cop wasn't on the payroll
If you're a clean cop you might as well not show up on the street
'Less you want to draw the heat
James Markham had a partner and now a witness for the cops
Him and Jimmy Smith were just out prowlin' around
He said, "I saw a man runnin' away, he looked just like the man that you have caught
He threw a jacket under a white car with out-of-state plates."
And Ms Helen Markham just nodded her head
Cop said, "Wait a minute, boys, this witness has cred"
So they took Tippit to the infirmary
And though Helen was in grief and misery
They told her that she could identify the guilty man
Four in the mornin' Ruby hauled Crafard out
"Take me to the highway so we can photograph that billboard"
Crafard looks up through his sleepy eyes
Says, "What'd you bring me here for? And who is that guy?"
Yes, here's the story of the Murdercade
And the man the authorities came to blame
For somethin' that he never done
Put in a prison cell, then executed without delay, he could-a been
Another fuckin' Hemingway
Five months later, the ghettos are in flames
Ruby's still in jail, not quite sane
While Leon Lee is still in the spyin' game
And the cops have put the screws to Markham, one loose word and he's back in jail
"Remember that robbery, you and Smith were let slip?"
"And remember your ma saw who killed that cop"
"You think you'll like to play ball with the law?"
"Remember it was Oswald that Smith saw, or you might all be on the wrong side of the bars
"And don't forget about your poor ol' ma."
James Markham said, "I'm really not sure."
Cops said, "A poor boy like you could use a break
We got you for the motel job and we're talkin' to your friend Smith
Now you don't wanna have to go back to jail, be a nice fellow
You'll be doin' society a favor
That sonofabitch is dead but getting aided
We want to bury this once and for all
We want to pin the double murder on him so no one else can pay
He ain't no fuckin Hemingway."
Ruby could take a man out with just one punch
But he never did like to talk about it all that much
It's my work, he'd say, part of clubs is an occasional affray
And when it's over I'd just as soon send 'em on their way
Up to some other club like the Weinstein's maybe
Where the amateurs will all call you baby
And ride your lap all the wayyyyyyyyyyyyyy
But then he woke up in a jailhouse
Where they try to turn a man into a mouse
All of Ruby's cards were marked in advance
The trial was a pig-circus, he never had a chance
The judge made Ruby's witnesses drunkards from the clubs
To the good folks who watched he was a Jew but not a bum
And to Dr West he was just another experi...ment
And there was no doubt that he pulled the trigger
Though he did not load the gun
The D.A. said he was the only one who did the deed
And the whole non-Jew jury agreed
Jack Ruby was falsely tried
The crime was murder "one, can't be justified
And he was set to fry
And the newspapers, they all went along for the ride
With Oswald dead, who really cared who did what.
How can the lives of such men be in the palm of Henry Wade's hand?
To see them obviously framed
Couldn't help but make you feel ashamed to live in a land
Where justice is a game
Now all the criminals in their coats and their ties
Were free to drink martinis and watch the sun rise
While Ruby sat like Buddha in a ten-foot cell
A used up man in a living hell
That's the story of the Murdercade
But it won't be over till they clear Oswald's name
And give us back the history they stole away
Put six feet under but one time he could-a been
Another fuckin Hemingwayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
