Odd that Lee Harvey Oswald would know the exact dates and tuition costs for the Albert Schweitzer College.

As they did no advertising how on earth did LHO find such a place of study, know those dates and other info?

Even an ad from 1964 is pretty thin in the information categories

Albert Schweitzer College Intuition 64adVasar_zpsedntmf7o

There were mentions to the place as it was operational in 55-68.
Tough to find alumni from the early years or 50's when it was doing summer classes only.

ZOE MERRET TO SUMMER IN EUROPE Sailing from New York, July 8 on the “Arosa Sky,” will be Zoe Merret. Zoe will be spending two and a half months touring the continent with other members of the youth group of the Unitarian Church. While in Switzerland, she will attend the Albert Schweitzer College for a two-week conference. Upon her return in the fall, Zoe will attend Mills College. Zoe, a graduate of Sir Francis Drake High School, is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Russell Merret of Kent Woodlands.

I have found others mentioning in newspaper stories their intention at a stay at the college in 57-59.
Often local or university press covering graduates plans, etc.
We need to contact a few of these early classmates to find out how they heard of ASC. etc.

And even a Rubenstein....

Rubenstein, Richard L. Born: 1924

Occupation: American theologian

From: Encyclopedia of Judaism, Encyclopedia of World Religions.

Holocaust theologian Richard L. Rubenstein was born in New York in 1924. He studied at both City College of New York and Hebrew Union College (HUC) before receiving his B.A. from the University of Cincinnati in 1946. He then began his rabbinical training at HUC, the seminary of Reform Judaism, but he found his studies there to be unfulfilling. He transferred to the Conservative Jewish Theological Seminary of America in New York, earning a master's in hebrew literature in 1952 and eventually achieving ordination there.

Rubenstein served as a rabbi with Temple Beth Emunah in Brockton, Massachusetts, from 1952 to 1954 and Temple Israel in Natick, Massachusetts, from 1954 to 1956. He then took positions as assistant director of the B'nai B'rith Hillel Foundation and chaplain to Jewish students at Harvard University, Radcliffe, and Wellesley from 1956–58. He earned a master's of theology at Harvard University Divinity School in 1955 and a doctorate in the history and philosophy of religion in 1960. He served as director of Hillel and chaplain to Jewish students at the University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie-Mellon University, and Duquesne University from 1958 to 1970.

Rubenstein has taught at a number of institutions, including the Albert Schweitzer College in Churwalden, Switzerland,
I wonder when Dick taught at ASC?

Harvard connections noted in many cases Very Happy

Oh BTW, I did find an ad for the college in 1956.

Historical Note:

The American Unitarian Association's Department of World Churches was previously known as the Foreign Churches Committee and the World Churches Committee. It became the Department of World Churches in 1948 under the leadership of John H. Lathrop; and in 1965, it became the Department of Overseas and Interfaith Relations under the leadership of the Rev. Max D. Gaebler. The International Association of Religious Freedom (IARF) worked with the Department of World Churches to promote Unitarian, and eventually Unitarian Universalist, principles throughout the world. The department also supported the Albert Schweitzer College in Switzerland.

Nice!

I have a screen capture somewhere in my files showing Hans Casparis (ASC Director) was on a speaking tour in California for part of '59. No where near Santa Ana tho...w hich is why I never used it.

Here's an interesting letter from 1985 found among Weisberg's collection:

Thx Greg, may want to post that here for obvious reasons.

Was Casparis speaking engagement in Santa Barbara? That was my first thought.

Awesome letter. Weller spotted all the usual irregularities in the corespondence but the arrival departure part is new to me.
It does sound like they were travelling, or Casparis was travelling to and from.
I noticed the americanized usage of language but thought perhaps it was him being friendly to an american by trying out some USA phrases.

Bjorn, a proclaimed 1959 student, has his own website page on ASC as you've likely seen,

I must admit the letters by Hans seem to be covering for either his helping LHO get into the SU by using the college and a deposit as proof LHO was to attend a swiss school when crossing borders, or something even more sinister.

Did you ever find the $25 receipt for the college deposit?
