Kent Courtney

This guy has flown under my radar until just recently. Courtney was a World War II U. S. Navy veteran and an associate of Guy Banister who, in 1960, ran for Governor of Louisiana as the nominee for the racist, anti-Semitic National States Rights Party:

Courtney was a member of the American Legion; and was apparently the head of the Legion’s “counter-insurgency unit” (see the “Raymond Franklin Krystinik redux” thread for why this may be relevant to the assassination). Courtney was also a close associate of Carlos Bringuier; one of the three Cubans who got into a fight with Oswald for distributing FPCC literature.

I have long suspected that this fight was staged as part of a ploy to make Oswald look like a communist and Castro supporter. It is alleged that Oswald accompanied Kent Courtney to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where he was introduced as “Leon” or “Leon Oswald.”

I’d be willing to bet that it was not Oswald, but rather Herbert “Leon” Lee (from Shreveport, Louisiana) who accompanied Courtney. Like Courtney, Lee was a U. S. Navy veteran. Greg Parker and I both suspect that it was Herbert Lee (not Oswald) who was at Sylvia Odio’s doorstep in late September, 1963; and who was introduced to her as “Leon.” Some time ago, researcher Steve Roe discovered a photo of Lee. Looking at that photo, I think Lee somewhat resembled Oswald.

In a letter to J. Edgar Hoover, Courtney described a telephone conversation he had with Marguerite Oswald in October, 1964; and claimed that “at no time” did he have “direct contact” with Oswald.

As mentioned above, Courtney was a World War II U. S. Navy veteran. As I discuss in my essay “Oswald, Fred Korth, and the Office of Naval Intelligence,” Guy Banister and Oswald were likely working for the ONI. Given Courtney’s association with Banister (and apparently Oswald), it’s entirely possible that he too was working for the ONI.

Consider also that following his service in the Navy, Courtney was a pilot for Pan American Airlines. As Greg Parker discusses in Volume two of his ground-breaking book, Pan American Airlines was involved with the CIA. This reinforces my belief that Courtney was working for the ONI.
