Beer Can Regatta

Post by Stan Dane on Thu 13 Jul 2017, 1:36 pm

Makes me almost want to move to Darwin. Spend a year drinking beer then build a boat with the empties! With my ROKC mates!

Ha! We lived up there for a bit over 10 years. It is where I got the JFK bug. My long suffering other half was on the Beer Can Regatta Committee (It was/is run by Lions).

I wonder if full cans make for better floatation. I guess those in Darwin will never know.

Darwin was not named after Charles for nothing. It is a petrie dish of natural selection.

In 1999, Darwin boasted its own “at-risk survivor”.

A bloke named Gordon picked up — and was attacked by — a king brown snake.

He lost his left arm and the use of his legs, and was revived three times on the operating table.

Gordon, who was drunk at the time, had been driving with a friend from Mandorah to Darwin when they saw the snake.

He picked it up with his left hand “because I was holding a beer in my right one.”

It bit him.

He put it in a plastic bag and threw it in the back of the car, then stuck his hand back in the bag.

It bit him eight more times.

His friend tried to keep him conscious by, as Gordon said, “whacking me in the head and pouring beer on me.”

There ain't no place like Darwin.

That doesn't sound like a true story but I bet it is.

Actually I'm surprised it even got in the news up there.  Too commonplace.

Darwin is full of UFOs, killer crocs, killer snakes, killer spiders, killer jelly fish, US Marines, circus freaks and fugitives from the law and/or the missus.

If you're not having fun in Darwin, you're not breathing.
