MLB in Sydney

Post by Stan Dane on Thu 20 Mar 2014, 3:40 am

Totally off the wall here for Greg and our Australian members:

Two Major League Baseball teams, the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Los Angeles Dodgers, are in Sydney now to play a couple of games. First time in 100 years, so I read. I'm curious how the locals view this. Is there much interest, anticipation, do they see it as a novelty like the circus coming to town, or is the prevailing attitude one of indifference?

Stan. just quickly.. the tabloid press is all over it. Players on front page last couple of days posing with bimbos and footballers (Rugby League players - a variation on Rugby and the most popular sport in Sydney).

US sport does have a small, but hardcore following here. To the rest, it's either a novelty, or a matter of profound indifference. Sydney is not huge on these things, so it's a bit puzzling on why it was chosen. It is a well known fact on the other hand, that you could draw a crowd to a game of tiddly-winks in Melbourne. They'll turn up in droves for anything.

Tiddly-winks!?!

It sounds as though an enterprising person might be able to make a tidy sum plying such "sports" in Melbourne.

Are they that hard up for such delights?
