To those in Florida, be safe

Post by Stan Dane on Sat 09 Sep 2017, 3:57 pm

I don't know if any ROKCers live in Florida or might be there now, but if so, my thoughts are with you on the eve of Hurricane Irma. My thoughts are with all the people there, for that matter.

The breadth and power of this storm is frightening. I understand there are still some people in the Florida Keys. I'm scared shitless for them. At this moment, Irma is back to Category 5 strength. This is going to be very bad.

Twenty-one years ago, we had a freakish storm here in Arizona, a microburst that lasted for a couple hours. We experienced sustained wind gusts up to 100 mph that stripped a good part of my roof off. At times it sounded like a freight train was roaring by. Then the rain seeped through the roof the rest of the night while we set up pots, pans and trash cans to catch the water. And we had no power. That was one of the scariest nights of my life. So helpless. I wouldn't wish that on anybody.

But that was nothing compared to this or what the people in Texas have gone through.

Again, I hope everybody is doing everything possible to be safe.

Stan, words won't be able to describe what this will be like.

Stan,

I remember that storm in Phoenix - if it's the one I think it is: starting around Baseline Road, the wind blew due north at an estimated 200 mph. I worked as a letter carrier in Glendale and when I got to work that morning, the gas pumps behind the post office (for our postal vehicles) was a twisted pretzel, the steel I-beams were bent double and we had no power. Still, to add a touch of "normalcy" to the ravaged area, we loaded our trucks with what mail we could and went to deliver our routes. Maneuvering down the neighborhood streets where my route was like a war zone: trees down, many blocking roads and many people outside told me to drive across their lawns to get around the obstacles, and large portions of houses were strewn everywhere. Most of the garage doors had been ripped off (most of the doors themselves were no longer in the vicinity - probably winding up somewhere in a valley north of the hills that constitute Thunderbird Park.

It took two months before the scars were gone from the neighborhoods but the gas pumps at the station were ripped out as irreparable.

Even though I was not in the area for the storm itself, the aftereffects were frightening.

Terry:

I remember that storm looking close to this, except the visibility wasn't quite this good:

A sign across the street was at a 45 degree angle and oscillating wildly. The air was full of flying debris and shingles. After that experience, Hurricanes have put the fear of the Almighty in me.
