Watching The World Turn
Tue 07 Jan 2020, 6:59 pm
I would like to pin down when Lee Oswald was first shown on television in Dallas.
Exactly what time CST was Oswald picture or film broadcast?
Thank you,
Ed

Ed, I have just had a quick without finding it. Best I could find was the first mention of his name which was on WFAA at about 2:40.
Best to ask DVP or Dennis the Menace Moricet (or however he spells it these days)

I'm guessing it's when the local news showed the clip of him in custody, the clip where his hair is messed up and he walks right past Bill Lovelady. If you do the math, the film would have been shot at DPD, then developed, then run through the telecine at the station.

Right, ABC radio broadcast the name Lee Oswald at 2:43
There is a footnote in With Malice for 2:02 picture of Oswald WFAA. But cant substantiate whether it was a picture taken, or shown...
Gilbride has 2:10 for a Oswald image shown on Dallas TV. But no footnote.
Oswald was photographed in the basement of DPD by an AP reporter at 2pm and this was supposedly shown at 3:10pm.
It appears it at best takes an hour to develop film from a still camera and get the image out over AP Wire....from there it could be minutes before shown on air. That estimate from Dealey/Assassination pics etc shown on air.

Ed, from my own experience casting back to the 70's in news our deadline for the lab was around 5.00pm. We went to air at 6.30pm. Processing/splicing/threading was laborious. Finally the film would be added to a compile reel to be threaded onto the telecine chain. I'd say allow for 1 and 1/2 hours from the time the canister of film arrived at the to station. Of course that's relying on the film lab having been on site. I can't imagine any moving pictures of Lee Oswald being broadcast much before 3.30pm. As for stills, not too sure, but a similar process back then I'd think.

KRLD or CBS RADIO has a 2:03pm* broadcast naming "Lee H. Oswald" as the 24 year old suspect arrested for Tippit murder.

watch At 1:23:30
* if times are correct this is 23+ minutes after a 1:40pm time is given
Cheers, Ed

Which image was first shown is also a question?
Was it the Texas Theater arrest image, AP photo of Lee in DPD basement with Det. Graves, Lee with messy hair in a police holding room, or a stock image?
Earlene states she was watching As The World Turns a CBS program.
IMO then the image the police, Gladys, Earlene and AC saw was on KRLD/CBS TV.
