Nice review,Bart. You are right about the horn honking in the basement. It is quite obvious that D'hority was honking his horn because reporters and officers were blocking his path.

Then Fritz suddenly feels need to be a traffic cop in a basement full of traffic cops....
Next on DPD TV we'll have the secret transfer of Oswald into one of two police cars, but dont worry our cameras will broadcast live exactly which car and which way it leaves. Stay tuned!

Horn honking surely couldn't have been any type of signal - too obviously blatant right? Car just wanted to get through the crowded basement yes? What I'll never comprehend and even if this was back in '63 is how they left Oswald so vulnerable while escorting him to the waiting car for the transfer. The DPD knew of the threats, that's documented. So they knew what needed to be done. Ol' mud guts Fritz led him through the doors to the basement and was in front and should have remained there and should have been the shield for any front on approach even if it was just from pesky reporters pushing forward. But no, mud guts Will went MIA. Why? I think the answer is clearly seen in the film of Oswald being murdered.

The car is just coming down at such a speed that you wonder whether it is not part of the plan as well, the car brings Ruby out of balance actually.

Yes, I know. Very cynical of me. He just had a nervous twitch and no motive whatsoever for preventing an Oswald trial without dropping all charges.

He was just unlucky that he forgot his own security plan for the prisoner's protection - which specifically had him standing right in front of Oswald, preventing any frontal shots - and moved forward a few yards, allowing the very shot he was supposed to prevent. Maybe that is what caused his hand to twitch behind his back? The sudden awful realization that he had now put his prisoner at risk - just prior to said prisoner being gunned down by a police groupie named Jack Ruby.

Levealle's reaction seems mechanical to me. Like he is an extra in a z grade monster movie from 1954 and he is the first to see the monster coming. 

If you grew up watching those type of movies, you might end up thinking that was a normal response. One that you should adopt just in case you ever found yourself needing to do a little acting that you've been caught by surprise.

Its like Leavelle and Graves are waiting for the valet, Will Fritzs, to fetch their car.
Instead of keeping the huddle together these numbskulls hold up.
I can put some blame on Will for just wandering over to help park cars. Its in a valets blood.
But these badgers should never had brought Lee out  if the cars werent even ready.

He told Lt. Rio S. Pierce to obtain another automobile from the basement and take up a lead position on Commerce Street. Deputy Chief Stevenson went back to the basement to inform Batchelor and Jones of the change in plans. Oswald was given his sweater, and then his right hand was handcuffed to the left hand of Detective J. R. Leavelle. Detective T. L. Baker called the jail office to check on security precautions in the basement and notify officials that the prisoner was being brought down.

On arriving in the basement, Pierce asked Sgts. James A. Putnam and Billy Joe Maxey to accompany him in the lead car. Since the armored truck was blocking the Commerce Street ramp, it would be necessary to drive out the Main Street ramp and circle the block to Commerce Street. Maxey sat on the back seat of Pierce's car, and Putnam helped clear a path through reporters on the ramp so that Pierce could drive up toward Main Street. When the car passed by the reporters at about 11:20 a.m., Putnam entered the car on the right front side. Pierce drove to the top of the Main Street ramp and slowed momentarily as Patrolman Roy E. Vaughn stepped from his position at the top of the ramp toward the street to watch for traffic. After Pierce's car left the garage area, Brown drove another police car out of the garage, moved part way up the Commerce Street ramp, and began to back down into position to receive Oswald. Dhority also proceeded to drive the follow-up car into position ahead of Brown.
As Pierce's car started up the ramp at about 11:20 a.m., Oswald, accompanied by Captain Fritz and four detectives, arrived at the jail office. Cameramen in the hallway of the basement took pictures of Oswald through the interior glass windows of the jail office as he was led through the office to the exit. Some of these cameramen then ran through the double doors near the jail office and squeezed into the line which had formed across the Main Street ramp. Still others remained just inside the double doors or proceeded through the double doors after Oswald and his escort emerged from the jail office. (See Commission Exhibit No. 2177, p. 217.)
When Fritz came to the jail office door, he asked if everything was ready, and a detective standing in the passageway answered yes. Someone shouted, "Here he comes!"; additional spotlights were turned on in the basement, and the din increased. A detective stepped from the jail office and proceeded toward the transfer car. Seconds later Fritz and then Oswald, with Detective Leavelle at his right, Detective L. C. Graves at his left, and Detective L. D. Montgomery at his rear, came through the door. Fritz walked to Brown's car, which had not yet backed fully into position; Oswald followed a few feet behind. Newsmen near the double door moved forward after him. Though movie films and video tapes indicate that the front line newsmen along the Main Street ramp remained fairly stationary, it was the impression of many who were close to the scene that with Oswald's appearance the crowd surged forward, according to Detective Montgomey behind Oswald..."

Seriously Fritz guarantees a cluster which is self evident from WC description above.
The other 3 mouth breathers become witnesses at that point.

I mean why bother.
They shoulda just shoved Lee out the jail door and yelled out:
'Your on your own Cop Killer!'
Lee would then have to out maneuver Ruby and several unmarked police cars each bent on his destruction to reach the safety of the armored car.
Of course it had a faulty tailpipe and carbon monoxide would kill anyone in the back in minutes in city traffic.

Lee would of had a better chance reaching his arraignment though or at least known he was about to be diagnosed with lead poisoning.

There are three people over by Fritz who jerk on the shot. One of the cops throws his hands up, the young guy's shoulders flinch up and the other one seems to jerk. I don't think there were any hand signals or beeping to signal Ruby. Ruby knew when and it was "now or never" and didn't need any prompting. Fritz made it so much easier for him by breaking up the protective ring for a clearer opening for Ruby. And yes, I do believe it was intentional.

I do think Fritz knew it was coming. Three people over by him flinch but he sort of just casually looks at the car, no flinch, then casually looks over afterward while people near him are flinching and jerking. This was his charge, after all, but he doesn't even bother to rush over to apprehend Ruby.

As was mentioned, the car almost hits Ruby. The crazy thing about it is, why in the fuck was the car not even position in the first place? It'd be like bringing Tim McVeigh out surrounded and the truck was not even there to whisk him away? Probably just another Keystone Kops error on DPD's part.

Go up to Vinny's GIF of Oswald getting shot. Don't watch Ruby come out - just look over to the left where Fritz is. Watch the cop's hands, the young guy's shoulders, and Fritz as the shot is fired. I take it back that the other guy over there [in the bow tie] doesn't appear to be startled, but the other two are.

Sorry, JFK_CASE, mate it was my poor attempt at some very crude humour. The word "jerk" here in Oz has a very different meaning than what it is usually means elsewhere I suspect.....

'suppose it's obvious to all but me, but I just vidied (Clockwork Orange lingo) that they had to kill him in front of cameras because if they killed him in his jail cell it might look like they just went ahead and killed him in his jail cell. Brilliant eh?

Nobody seems to have noticed Ruby walking up to Oswald.

Perhaps it was the blinding lights in the basement.

In Fritz's WC testimony he stated that when he heard the shot in the basement, he thought a police officer had shot Oswald.
