Frauds and Hucksters in the JFK Case: Marshal Evans

I first encountered this name after posting a link to my essay on the alleged Oswald wedding ring to Facebook and I was messaged by an excitable but friendly lady who informed me that Marshal Evans had Oswald's red stone ring and she had tried it on at a conference. When I explained that this ring could not have belonged to Oswald, she  insisted it did, and sent me a video showing herself wearing it. - she also contacted Evans who again confirmed it for her.

Evans wrote a book called JFK The Reckoning published October 14, 2018. It is 270 pages of utter garbage and selling for the ridiculous price of $43.50.

But it is chapter 8 titled Oswald's Red Stone Ring which is of interest here.

The above part about retrieving rings is in reference to the 1981 autopsy. After the original burial, Groody was quoted as stating that he had helped Marina place a wedding ring and what he took to be an engagement ring (the red stone ring) on Oswald's pinkie as they would not fit on the ring finger. This alone rules both rings out as having belonged to Oswald and were most likely Marina's rings. 

In the book, Evans goes on to explain that Groody gave him the ring to expiate his guilt. Note from the embedded passage that Evans claims that Groody made him promise to mention nothing about the theft of the ring from the body until after he (Groody) and his wife had passed away.  This is an important component of the fraud. Make sure those who can expose it are dead, or mentally incapable of exposing the truth before perpetrating the fraud. This also allows you to put whatever words you want in their mouths. It is a ploy repeated by all we come across in this series.

Additionally, the ring paraded around by Evans has an "L" on it. This distinctive feature was never described by Groody, Marina or the 1981 autopsists. 

The final nail in Evans' story was put in place over 2 years prior to his book coming out. That nail comes from Dr. Vincent Di Maio's autobiography Morgue: A Life in Death published in May 2016.



On a side note, Groody, after the 1981 autopsy would go to his grave saying that the person he helped bury in 1963 was not the same person as was dug up. It is clear that he came under the influence of Evans and others of the Lifton/Groden persuasion regarding body snatching, body alteration and similar nonsense. 

Evans is far from the worst of the worst. Apart from the book, he does not appear to be attempting to profit from this fraud. He seems content to hang out with Groden on the knoll and spin his bullshit yarns (and rings) at equally dubious conferences.

Robert Groden - writer, director, producer

Groden was a hero to the Warren Commission critics in 1975 when he showed the Zapruder film on TV for the first time. His hero status grew again during his time at the HSCA.

He remains a hero to many still - a hangover from his consultancy on Stone's JFK, his co-authoring of NYT Best Seller, High Treason, and more recently, as the little man who took on City Hall over his hawking on the Grassy Knoll - and winning.

To others, his fall from grace began with the OJ civil trial in 1996 where he testified as an expert that a 1993 photograph of Simpson wearing Bruno Magli shoes at an NFL football game was a forgery. Then came the bombshell evidence of 30 more photos appearing from a different photographer on the same day, showing Simpson wearing the same clothes, same shoes.

Doubling down is one of the hallmarks of the Huckster when cornered - and that is what Groden did here, insisting that the photo he gave testimony on, was faked. 

Fast forward to 2011 and Groden appeared on Black Op Radio talking about his upcoming book. In that interview, he stated (Highlighting mine):

I actually found a woman some years ago. She was terrified. She did not want to come forward. And she finally agreed to give an interview, and I did interview her. When the shots actually went off, she was talking to Lee Oswald on the second floor. […] We always assumed that Lee had the change, that he had had the change for the machine. He didn’t. He went into the office across from the snack room with a dollar bill and asked for change. He said, “No pennies, please.” And, as the change was being counted out into his hand, the shots went off. And they looked at each other, this woman and Lee, and [asked], “What was that?” Backfires, firecrack[ers], who knew? He got the rest of the change, walked back across the hall, bought the Coke and then just a little over a minute later there was a gun in his ribs held by Officer Baker. Lee had an airtight alibi. He could not possibly have done this. She told this story to the Warren Commission. They told her to keep her mouth shut. And she did. She told very few people. Very few people. I was one of the few that she did. So I got to speak to her because I had a friend who knew a friend of hers. I had to promise her I would never reveal any of this until after she was gone. And now she is. The whole story, including her name, will be in the next book. 


And there it is - same MO as we saw with Evans... the witness made Groden promise to keep her story under his hat until she had passed away - conveniently leaving no one to contradict the story. 

In 2013 when this book was published and this new witness was being pushed as a major breakthrough, it took ROKC all of 5 minutes to prove there was no new witness and that it looked like someone had pulled the wool over Groden's eyes by pretending to be "Geraldine Reid" - one of the 3 ways the one and only Mrs Reid was referred to in the records - "Mrs  Robert A Reid", "Geraldean Reid" and "Geraldine Reid". The latter was a simple misspelling. Her real name was Geraldean Reid and she was married to Robert A Reid. Marriage and death records prove this beyond any and all doubt.  In fact, Groden seems to have missed all references to Geraldean Reid and states in his book there was a Delores Reid - aka Mrs Robert A Reid and Geraldine Reid. Delores was in fact another employee altogether - Delores Kounos. 

Groden's claim is that Mrs Robert A Reid testified before the commission and that Geraldine Reid was flown to testify, but was instead sworn to secrecy about what she witnessed.

Conveniently for Groden, he heard about the death of "Geraldine Reid" in time to publish her story for the 50th anniversary.

I no longer believe Groden was scammed by a little old lady. The scammer was Groden himself. There was no little old lady. He invented "Geraldine Reid" (based on the misspelling of Geraldean in the records) and her story. Think about it. What scam artist doesn't want to be around to see the fruits of their scam? That is surely half the fun. 

I have not read the book, but as far as I can tell, there is no evidence produced regarding the life or death of this witness. 

The real Geraldean Reid passed away in 1973.

In a review of the book, the usually mild-mannered Zach Robertson was scathing, indicating that the book seemed to endorse, among other things, the  completely bogus James Files story and the completely bogus McCone - Rowley memo

But the scamming in this book does not stop there. Zach also pointed out that Groden had tried to pass off a photo of a dummy used in a re-creation as being a real JFK autopsy photo.

Sean Murphy had been eagerly awaiting this book for details on this new witness - who he believed was most likely Geneva Hine. I can only imagine how disappointed Sean was when he read the book. In fact, I would not be surprised if this book was part of the reason that Sean walked away from all this. Who could blame him?

In more recent years, Groden has taken to hanging out with another in this series, Judyth Vary Baker.

Here they are, standing over the grave of Lee Oswald as if they actually see anything but dollar signs in front of them.



His fraud is far more significant than that of his side-kick, Marshal Evans, in that it has sought to fool a very large population in the name of book sales.  

If Groden disagrees, I invite him to do what he tried unsuccessfully to do in the past - sue for defamation.

You've highlighted something which is quite grotesque regarding some of the researchers and their behavior re: the JFK assassination. It seems most start out with all the best intentions but soon become corrupted by the possibility of a financial gain along with the chance of notoriety. Fame and fortune can be irresistible for some. It seems Groden is no different. Whatever credits he may have earned early on he has forfeited those long ago.

High Treason was one of the first books I read on the case.
I have t confess Groden was a bit of a hero t me. Showing the Zap film on Geraldo, his "work" for the HSCA( which along with Jack Whites contribution just makes me cringe now....reading the transcript of Whites testimony is a LNs wet dream)...hell i even bought into the myth of the plucky outsider sticking it t the Man and the faceless corporate monstrosity that is the 6th floor museum

In my humble opinion the sight of the Fetzer masked Groden hovering over JVB as she writhed on Lee's grave was the final straw...the straw that broke LarryTrotterCamels back so t speak.
He destroyed his legacy, cheapened everything he once stood for and helped turn assassination research into a tawdry tabloid free for all.
I agree completely Mick...the faintest whiff of fame or notoriety and all integrity goes out the window.
In many ways Stone's film was one of the worst things t happen. It unleashed several hitherto uncontrollable egos and transformed apparently genuine truth seekers into fame hungry tabloid whores.
Nothings too degrading or demeaning...

The potential ramifications would be staggering.
How does she share this knowledge? Does she attempt t educate, elucidate and use her experience as a living template..exposing the fundamental corruption at the heart of the American militarist machine?
No.
Does she fuck.
She surrounds herself with hustlers, holocaust deniers, religious extremists and tries t con as much money as she can from her troupe of naive hangers on and acolytes.
