Yet another nail in ol' Lee HARVEY'S coffin

I was just browsing through Tim Weiner's " Legacy of Ashes" a brutal, if somewhat one dimensional, expose of the CIAs first 60 years when yet another problem for ol' Jimbo Baggins and his brains trust hit me.
In Harvey and La La land the whole point of this extraordinarily convulted decade long double doppelganger project was to infiltrate an agent into the Soviet Union, right?
So the project would have been run out of the Directorate of Plans, Soviet Russia desk, probably with counterintelligence interface with Angletons SOG. A project like this would be zealously guarded, right?
One small problem.
Read through the history of early CIA attempted penetrations.
Into Albania, Poland, Soviet Ukraine etc .Reinfiltating .if you will the emigres who managed to escape post WW2.
With Harvey, the supposed Hungarian/ WW2 Soviet orphan, the H and L project would fit into this milieux.
Thanks to Philby( head of MI6s Soviet division) , George Blake and others ALL these operations were complete failures.
The teams being captured almost immediately by the waiting Soviets; then either executed or turned.
After Burgess and Maclean's escape Philby was dismissed. Not prosecutex. IndedI he continued on as a contact agent in Lebanon, where he was working as a journalist. The Philbys had deep roots in the Middle East. Philbys father, St John, who eventually converted to Islam, was a noted Orientalist; involved with the House of Saud and the machinations around the original British oil concession.
By the .mid 50s( long after Harvey started growing extra teeth and scars and turning into Lee) the CIA knew their operations were compromised.
The realisation probably led to Wisners nervous breakdown. If not his eventual suicide.
Bill Harvey wrote a famous report pretty much exposing Philbys as thr traitor he was.
In this climate, with the Agency fully aware all their intended Eastern Block penetrations were blown I find it inconceivable theydt have allowed the H and L project to go ahead.
In fact the technological developments- U2 and satellites- were fast tracked because the CIA had absolutely no idea what was going on behind the curtain.
Red Sox, Redskin and even the putative false defector programme of the late 50s may have been attempts to belatedly rectify the situation.
To add to the countless other reasons H and L is a pile of stinking manure ; from a historical perspective if H and L DID exist it would have been scrubbed .
Indeed the more I think of it from a purely historical perspective, missing teeth and other estorica aside, the whole idea just seems completely implausible.
Only people e zero understanding y the era and the history could buy this shit.
The scary thing was most of the H and L gang were alive at this time.

There are four possibilities, as far as I can see:

1 - They genuinely believe that there was a long-term doppelganger scheme involving two unrelated boys from different parts of the world, and all the other far-fetched stuff that comes with it. It may sound crazy, but the world contains plenty of crazy people, and something like the JFK assassination is bound to attract a fair number of them.

2 - They used to believe in all that nonsense, until at some point they realised that it was nonsense, but they aren't brave enough to admit that they were wrong. You'd think they would quietly drop the subject and hope that everyone forgot about it, but perhaps they feel they've invested too much time and effort by now to just let it go.

3 - They are in it for the money. Obviously Armstrong won't expect to sell many copies of a 1000-page book that's full of bizarre underlinings and italics. But I've seen it suggested that they are hoping for a Hollywood-style film deal. Could be true, I suppose.

4 - They are deliberately trying to defuse criticism of the lone-nut theory by giving the media ammunition to depict genuine critics as crazy 'conspiracy theorists'.

If I had to choose, I'd probably go for number 2 for Armstrong and number 3 for Hargrove, but I wouldn't rule out the other options.

Having said that, it's curious that whenever a big problem arises for the Warren Commission account, a related and far-fetched conspiracy theory pops up that has the effect of defusing genuine criticism.

Strange goings-on at JFK's autopsy which suggest that his wounds were deliberately misrepresented? Look over there, at the body-alteration theory! They stole his body from Air Force One and no-one noticed! His wounds were faked! All the shots came from the front!

The Darnell and Wiegman films show someone who looks like Oswald standing in the doorway of the book depsitory? Look over there, at the faked Altgens 6 photograph! They pasted Billy Lovelady's head over Oswald's! They wanted to prevent people thinking it was Oswald in the photo, so they chose to paste in the head of someone who looked so much like Oswald that it caused people to think it was Oswald in the photo!

Oswald was impersonated in Mexico City? Look over there, at the 'Harvey and Lee' theory! There were actually two Oswalds! He was a fake all along! And so was his mother!

Well said, Jeremy. I agree with you. I too have wondered at times whether these types are disinfo guys trying to muddy the waters and make it look like all critics of the official story look like kooks.
