Platinum Smuggling

Came across this doc in the Weisberg Collection a few days ago.
I wrote about platinum smuggling out of Colombia in my book. Was a bit surprised to see Weisberg also seems to have had an interest, but I can't figure out what his interest would have been.

Could this have been a means to make illegal payments to possible agents? It does resemble the black market drug rings the CIA used in Vietnam and Laos. Perhaps as this Ebury fellow used his ring to fund the Axis powers, these rings could also fund other illegal activities without a financial trail. Weisberg is a favorite of mine, I can only hope to help. Just some ideas for consideration. Hope your well.

$10,000 worth of fix price platinum in 1943 is worth over $400,000 today
I'm looking for information on CIA/Military drug running to help pay for Bay of Pigs. Surely they were over there 13 million budget

I think you guys may be onto something.
Another member here sent me a link to a file in MFF showing that David Phillips had probably been involved in smuggling uranium in 1948 - as pointed out to me, this was 2 years prior to his official commencement with CIA.

Fascinating, as something of an authority on the use of platinum in public finance, I'd never heard of that. It's not hard to get Congress to fund intelligence operations (which almost by definition means illegal activities). More likely destination of profits would be private Swiss bank accounts.
