pick a number

Post by greg parker on Tue 28 Jan 2014, 7:53 am

I don't want to say where it's from, or what number I think it is because I don't want to influence anyone.

What number is it in your opinions?

thanks Lee.

It's interesting in itself that you can't choose between them.

Hasan, think about the mechanics, strokes, method (or however you want to describe it) of writing a 6 and then look at it again and see if you still think that's what it is.

Sorry chaps... just realised... my browser didn't show the image properly.. I thought it was a pick any number thread.
Anyway I can see one image now (are there two?).

It looks like 54.

Looks like 54 to me. Is this related to the manufacture date of the Western Cartridge Co. 6.5mm Carcano ammunition?

Okay. Thanks guys. I've got the result I thought I would get.

For mine, 54.

The book will explain...

Based upon handwriting mechanics the first number would be a 5

Hasan,

the thing is, it has been represented as being 64 - and it makes a big difference in context...

I agree that it's meant to be "54" ...... unless the first character is a rune. I always suspected Vikings were involved but didn't have the evidence until now.

Thank you both.

Someone called it a 64 and built a theory around it which no one ever bothered to check...

Typical. Has this mysterious number writer written any more 5's or 6's in his notes?

Before we go accusing those damn Vikings, we had better determine which runic system this badly formed rune belongs to.  If it is the Elder *sowilu, then it couldn't have been the Vikings, but might have been a tribe from the migratory period as early as the 2nd century -- discussed by Tacitus (Cimbri, anyone?) --, up to 7th century in the north.  If you think, on the other hand, that this is the Younger Futhark 'sol' but badly closed and slightly angled, then let's be clear:  it was the Vikings from Norway/Sweden, and not the Danish ones, who are the accomplices.

Let us, as always, attempt to be as precise as possible.

Damn straight. It wasn't the Danish Vikings that hosed this up. They were too busy with their drinking horns to bother making unruly runes.
