I have written an article and included all relevant evidence in a post at my site about the 'find' of the Hidell ID.
Enjoy.

I think the biggest takeaway from the Lowell Brandle incident is suspicion towards William Waldman. After receiving the fake Hidell order Waldman called his own anonymous "source" in St. Petersburg and discovered Brandle lived at the address on the order form before officially contacting the FBI. What kind of "source" does a sporting goods executive have across the country that will look up and verify a current resident on demand? Also a memo in the FBI HQ file on the incident has Waldman's name redacted. I'm pretty sure his name only appears in Waldman's HSCA subject file which I believe was released via a FOIA suit:
Redacted memo: https://www.maryferrell.org/showDoc.html?docId=62384#relPageId=96
After Waldman wrote back to Brandle saying Klein's would not fill the order, Brandle replied with a humorous letter:
A bit off topic but I think it's a safe bet Waldman was some sort of informant. Interestingly his first contact with the FBI was with the Chicago Field Office in 1953 while Guy Bannister was in charge. There are three FBI reports on Waldman from 1953, the first being a lab report, all during Bannister's tenure. All three of these reports are still withheld in full and under court seal so exempt from the JFK Act:

Alexander Stephens "Alex" Hidell, Sr & Jr. info
Sun 31 Oct 2021, 1:49 pm
FWIW, Regarding the FBI report interviewing the new owner of the Hidell Hardware Store in Dallas, Mrs. Knowles, she is in error. There was indeed an Alex Hidell, Sr. and an Alex Hidell, Jr. Alex Jr. died in Los Angeles at the young age of 31.
Alexander Stephens Hidell, Sr. was the son of Colonel William Henry Hidell, who was the private secretary to Alexander Hamilton Stephens, Vice President of the Confederate States of America.
I did a lot of work on this family, wrote several of their findagrave bios, and connected them all up on findagrave. Here is Alex, Sr's memorial. Alex, Jr's memorial is linked to his at the bottom of the page. Never found a link between Oswald's A.J. Hidell alias and these Hidell's, but you never know.

The issue as I see it is that there was no Alek James Hidell until after the assassinaion.LindaGiovannaZambanini wrote:FWIW, Regarding the FBI report interviewing the new owner of the Hidell Hardware Store in Dallas, Mrs. Knowles, she is in error. The weapons orders were in A Hidell and AJ Hidell and the stamp on the FPCC flyers handed out at the NO docks was AJ Hidell.
The first we see of a Alek (mistyped as Alex in some memos) James Hidell is on the fake selective service card.
The more I think about it, the more I suspect Marina and unknown others as behind the hijinx around the name and associated operations.
It was not Oswald handing out at the docks. But afer that person was picked up and interviewed by port cops, a handover of the flyer distribution went to Oswald. With that also came a change in the address on the flyers from PO Box 30016 (the box was actually 30061) to Oswald's street address. Why? It's as if Oswald did not even know about that box...
The Colonel William Henry Hidell info is interesting, but as you say, there is no known conection. Even the son and grandson being named (Alex)ander... doesn't quite fit - especially with middle name Stephens. I do think it is at least possible that the surname was plucked from the history books... but the initials AJ remain a mystery.

As with cops, the value of informants comes down to stats. How many are arrested/convicted wit the help of a particular informant? Informants are listed among the reasons for a lot of wronful convictions.

FBI SA J L Quiqley reports of Oswald stating he knew of a Hidell.greg_parker wrote:The issue as I see it is that there was no Alek James Hidell until after the assassinaion.LindaGiovannaZambanini wrote:FWIW, Regarding the FBI report interviewing the new owner of the Hidell Hardware Store in Dallas, Mrs. Knowles, she is in error. I do believe there was a person who contacted Oswald using the name Hidell and who was connected to or at least wanted it to appear that way to the FPCC - just prior to Oswald's arrest in NO.@greg_parker wrote:

Yep, and I think that may well be true.
The description of the person who ordered the flyers was not Oswald.
And the first flyers distributed were on the docks where the Wasp was berthed. And thse ones had the name Hidell stamped on them. Whoever that was was reported and escorted out of the area by a port police officer.
It was after this that "Hidell" contacted Oswald, flyers were delivered to Oswald and he took over the distribution with "Hidell" apparently going deep underground and this bactch of flyers being samped wit Oswald's name.
There is no logical alternative I can think of as an explanation for the series of events, Oswald's claim about beng contaced by Hidell, nor the change of names on the flyers.[/size]
Hidell is also listed as New Orleans Chapter on one of the cards in evidence.
