Militant and Worker
Sun 20 Dec 2020, 7:18 pm
While looking at the BYP's I had a thought, or more a request.
Please answer:
1) Did the investigation uncover any mail that included the Militant or Worker newspapers?
2) Is there any Militant's or Worker's at the archives?
3) Are there any case file photo's or any copies of the newspapers sent to Lee?
For now this is all.
Mahalo in advance,
Ed

A complete archive of The Militant is available online here:
https://www.marxists.org/history/etol/newspape/militant/index.htm
Nothing online as far as I know for The Worker.
There were only a dozen or so Militant subscribers in the Dallas / Fort Worth area according to data published by the paper itself in late 1963. A more detailed investigation might have noted a letter from 'LH' of Dallas in the 11 March issue, asking for more coverage of a range of left-wing organisations. It seems no attempt was made to establish who LH was; a full name and address might have been file at Militant HQ. But either the FBI failed to notice the letter or decided it was a stone better left unturned.
I have contacted The Militant, which is still around under another guise, but they said they no longer have records going back that far.

Thanks Bart and Orange,
That is a start.
Cheers, Ed
PS. Do we know how the newspapers were mailed?

Good story on the Militant Orange,
Back issues of The Militant , 1963 for examination.
https://www.themilitant.com/Militant_Back_Issues/1960_1969/backissu1963.html
Almost every one has front page articles with Kennedy under scrutiny for something or other.
Militant front page story of March 11 (date of militant in byp's) is un-characteristically not about Kennedy but LBJ!

If I remember correctly, Oswald was supposedly a pack rat, saving everything - scraps of paper and so on. So is there anything in the record anyone is aware of that they found these newspapers in his possessions? I mean, sure not everyone keeps old newspapers - maybe not even LHO. But it'd be interesting to know if they ever found them.

I believe there were a couple of Worker / Militants in the FBI inventory of his possessions. I think one or two issues might have arrived after the assassination. Mary Ferrell would probably have the relevant info on file.

Thanks, Ed. Interesting to see the Mary Ferrell page. And I thought I was the first to notice the 'L.H.' letter! Makes me wonder if there's not some unreleased FBI files on 'L.H.'; they must surely have noticed it and investigated.

Thanks for the info, Ed. It's one of those intriguing things about the case, like also they never tracked down where Oswald got his bullets from and why he had his military ring on when he was arrested. You know, like all young Marxists/Commies would be wearing one :-)

All great replys thank you.
Orange they did and were all over it. Perhaps to keep more egg off their faces.
Yes JFKCASE and or like wearing a name on wrist yet going by alias...
Well Mick perhaps an examination will raise even more 'questions' ... answers be damned... Im not answering for anyone.
Where all were these Newspapers being mailed?
iirc informant made copies of the mailing cards... I have seen it and never noted it for any addy than Po Boxes of Lee's. Can anyone show Militant or Worker with an Irving address plate/card for him???
Seems ONE issue went to Ruth's house of Paine.
One?
Can anyone elaborate on that?
Merry Christmas!
Ed

One issue of a newspaper was sent to Ruth's address which the Quaker said she didnt know the date of this publication since she didn't take it out of the "wrapper"
How many inconsistencies does Ruth present here?
How many newspapers were 'forwarded' to her...?
Do the numbers add up?
Merry Christmas!
Ed
PS Ruth never had a look at a Militant so how did she know it was such if she never opened the wrapper? Was the wrapper sealed or simply folded, etc.?
Can you understand my need to have such a mailed and wrapped Militant and Worker for examination.
The record is lacking.
Are there images of ANY Worker or Militant in its packaging in existence from 1963?
Were they wrapped in plain brown paper with no indication of senders business?
Or bright communist red paper with eye popping yellow hammers and sickles all over it and THE MILITANT proudly displayed in the senders address... hmmm me doubts it.
Cheers

HOLD THE PHONE!
Ruth is cornered and admits to seeing a Magazine Wrapper.
The one from Minsk... Cat Exit Bag.
Mrs. PAINE - I'm quite certain I did not see well, let's see, any of those with the possible exception of a newspaper from Minsk.
Magazine wrapper," I don't know whether that's it.
Mr. JENNER - Well, you can't tell from that description?
Mrs. PAINE - I can't tell from that--perhaps there was no such listing, but that's what I recall having seen.
Mr. JENNER - What do you recall having seen?
Mrs. PAINE - A newspaper from Minsk, but it doesn't appear to be listed.
Mr. JENNER - Yes, it is--just a moment. Let's go off the record here for a moment.
(Discussion between Counsel Jennet and the witness, Mrs. Paine, off the record.)
Mr. JENNER - I guess you are right--that was just a wrapper.
Merry Christmas to all!
Ed

Do you think Ruth will ever come clean in her lifetime? She still has a chance to set the record straight if she wants.
